Stack Overflow is becoming an archaeological layer.
Look at the chart of monthly questions. It rises with the web, peaks and then drops off a cliff.
In 2014, developers posted over 200,000 questions a month. In December 2025, it was 3,862. That is about a 98% collapse from the peak.
We have not stopped writing code. We have stopped asking each other for help in public.
The old workflow was: Google the error message. The new workflow is: paste it into a chat window.
You can feel it in daily work. The conversation has moved from the public forum to private windows with OpenAI, Anthropic and GitHub Copilot.
The answer is instant. No waiting, no moderation, no duplicate flags.
But it is a loss for the commons. When problems get solved privately, the solution does not become shared memory.
The searchable trail thins out, especially for early career developers who used to learn by reading the breadcrumb trail of other people’s mistakes.
Public Q&A is thinning. Private synthesis is thickening.
