🚢 Latvia’s Freeport of Riga: a small nation with a big role in global logistics
Anyone else noticed how many Latvian HGVs you see driving on European roads?
We recently visited the Freeport of Riga as part of our ‘mega-change that drives business change’ project, and found that this is where many of those very same trucks begin their journey.
It turns out Latvia is a bit of a powerhouse in European logistics. The Freeport of Riga sits at the crossroads of European and Eurasian maritime and land routes.
With a trading history stretching back some 820 years, the port now runs on modern, ‘smart’ operational processes. We saw ships laden with oil products, timber, coal and chemical substances—just a fraction of the nearly 20 million tons of cargo that passed through the port last year from 2,588 ships.
Add in major rail connections and cutting-edge infrastructure, and you’ve got a small nation playing an outsized role in global supply chains.
It’s also a barometer of wider mega trends. Despite geopolitical tensions and moves to decouple from certain markets, logistics remains a vital artery in a fragmented world.
The flow of goods continues to bind us together.
