🌍 “The most advanced digital society in the world.” - Wired
Estonia’s journey from Soviet rule to a prosperous European nation is nothing short of remarkable.
We recently explored the e-Estonia Briefing Centre, LIFT99 tech hub and the NATO Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence during a visit to Estonia.
From Soviet rule to digital powerhouse: Estonia’s life expectancy surged from 66 to 78 years since 1991, with a GDP per capita double that of Russia. Estonia ranks 17th in the Corruption Perceptions Index, while Russia lags at 136th.
How? Determined digital transformation through the ‘Tiger Leap’ plan, which revolutionised governance by introducing digital IDs, e-residency, online voting and much more. This digital infrastructure has streamlined services, boosted data ownership and positioned Estonia as a global leader in digital innovation.
It hasn’t been easy. Estonia’s massive societal onboarding program required significant effort to ensure digital literacy across the population. Success also invites threats; Estonia faced massive cyber attacks, primarily from Russia.
As Estonia now looks to integrate AI and blockchain, it is nailing its colours to the mast with new innovations. Time will tell if it can also lead and win the AI and blockchain revolutions.
